New York, Manhattan, Long Island LASIK

Recovery from cataract surgery is generally quick and free of any complications. Immediately following your surgery, your eye will be covered with a protective shield to help prevent the risk of infection, and to give your eye time to recover. This shield will need to be worn during sleep for the first 2 days to help prevent damage to your eye.
In addition to an eye shield, you will need to follow New York cataract surgeon, Dr. James R. Kelly’s advice, making sure to:
- Use your prescription eye drops
- Wear sunglasses when going outdoors for a few days
- Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for a few days
- Keep the eye area clean
Taking these simple steps will help ensure a prompt and satisfactory recovery.
Results
The healing period for cataract surgery is usually very rapid. After this initial recovery period, most patients report excellent results. This can include improvements from removing cataracts such as better night vision, and a reduction of glare, but can also include better vision in general, allowing many patients to enjoy a life free from prescription glasses.
Your results will vary depending on your particular vision difficulties. The experienced New York cataract surgeons at Kelly Laser Center will discuss what you can expect during your initial cataract surgery consultation.
If you have questions about cataract surgery and live in or around New York City, Long Island, or Manhattan, New York, please contact Kelly Laser Center to schedule an initial consultation today.

Cataract surgery at our comfortable New York office is done as a quick, outpatient procedure. Before your procedure begins, eye drops will be administered to dilate your pupil, and local anesthetic will be used to make the surgical area sufficiently comfortable. You may also be given a sedative prior to your surgery to help increase your comfort.
Removing Cataracts
New York City ophthalmologist, Dr. James R. Kelly, MD, utilizes ultrasound energy to break apart your cataract, and make lens removal easier. Once a small incision has been made, a tiny probe will be inserted into your eye allowing one of our eye surgeons to direct ultrasound onto your lens, breaking the lens into easily removable pieces. Once removed, an intraocular lens will be placed into the empty lens capsule.
The entire procedure generally takes less than 15 minutes and one eye is corrected at a time. If you have cataracts in both eyes, as most patients do, you will need to return to our office within a few weeks to have your other eye operated on.
If you live in or around New York City, Long Island, or Manhattan, New York and would like more information about what to expect during cataract surgery, please contact the eye doctors at Kelly Laser Center to schedule an initial consultation today.

Like any surgical procedure, cataract surgery comes with some risks and complications. These risks are rare, and most can be treated without any difficulty. However, knowing your risks before committing to a surgery is always in your best interests.
Cataract Surgery Risks
The risks of cataract surgery include:
- Swelling or inflammation
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Retinal detachment
- Glaucoma
- Secondary cataract
Experienced Long Island cataract surgeon, Dr. James R. Kelly, MD, takes every possible precaution to help ensure a safe and successful cataract surgery. But there is never a guarantee against complications which may require additional surgical procedures to treat.
Cataract Surgery Benefits
For a large majority of patients, the benefits of cataract surgery far outweigh the risks. When left untreated, cataracts can lead to a loss of vision, and cataract surgery remains the only treatment.
By removing your natural lens and replacing it with an artificial lens, you not only eliminate the cataract, but prevent future cataracts from occurring. In addition, lens replacement surgery has proven to be effective at correcting a range of common vision disorders, leaving several people who have had cataract surgery with vision that exceeds their pre-surgery acuity, helping lessen their dependence on prescription eyewear.

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant composed of eight compounds called tocopherols and tocotrienols. These compounds work to fight free radicals in the body that can cause damage ranging from premature aging to cancer. In addition, studies have found that the antioxidants in vitamin E are capable of helping prevent cataracts by as much as 60 percent and reducing the risks of age related macular degeneration by 25 percent.
How to Get Vitamin E
The USRDA for vitamin E is 22.5 I.U. daily. Fortunately, many delicious foods are high in vitamin E, making supplementation often unnecessary. Foods with the highest concentrations of vitamin E include:
- Enriched cereal
- Sunflower seeds
- Almonds
- Spinach
- Hazel nuts
- Mixed nuts
- Avocados
- Peanuts
Of course, you can also supplement your diet with vitamin E pills. This is particularly important for smokers and breastfeeding mothers who require a higher intake of vitamin E.
Long Island eye doctor, James R. Kelly, MD, can discuss diet and visual health with you during your regular eye examinations, and help you determine if you are getting an appropriate amount of this important nutrient.

Myopia, more commonly known as nearsightedness, is a condition in which objects close up are clear, but objects at a distance are blurry or indistinguishable. This common vision disorder may be genetic, more common in people who are born with eyes that are elongated or with steep corneas.
In the past, treatment for myopia has relied primarily on prescription glasses or contact lenses. These solutions can provide greater visual clarity, but may also be burdensome, and interfere with your lifestyle. With advancements in vision correction surgery, Long Island LASIK surgeon, Dr. James R. Kelly, MD, can provide you with a customized solution that will free you from prescription eyewear, and permanently correct your distance vision.
LASIK for Myopia
There are a number of options for LASIK surgery. Depending on the thickness of your cornea, we may recommend traditional LASIK, custom LASIK, or blade-free LASIK. All of these options are capable of reshaping your cornea and providing vision of 20/20 or better.
During your initial LASIK consultations, Dr. Kelly will carefully evaluate your eyes, and help you determine the best solution for your vision needs.
If you live with myopia in New York City, Long Island, Manhattan, New York, or surrounding boroughs, please contact Kelly Laser Center to schedule an initial LASIK consultation today.

Fat gets a bad rap these days, but did you know that fat is actually an essential part of your diet? Essential fatty acids like omega-3s are necessary for the healthy production of muscles, nerves, and organs. They are also necessary for proper cell function, blood pressure and heart rate regulation, and the prevention of blood clots.
Essential Fatty Acids and the Eyes
In addition to the necessary function fatty acids play in your body, they play an important role in maintaining visual health. Omega-3 fatty acids have been linked to proper vision development in children, but continue to be necessary as we age.
Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce your risk of:
Some studies have found that people with the highest concentration of omega-3s were as much as 30 percent less likely to experience age-related vision disorders. However, because your body cannot produce its own omega-3s, it is important to know what foods to eat in order to increase your intake.
Foods High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids
- Cold water fish
- Flaxseed and flaxseed oil
- Walnuts
- Dark leafy greens
Wild-caught cold water fish provides the most easily digestible form of omega-3s. If you are not a fan of fish, you can supplement your diet with fish oils in both pill and liquid form. The most important thing is that you shoot for at least seven grams of omega-3s every week. This will help keep your eyes, and body, healthy.
If you would like more information on diet and visual health, please contact Kelly Laser Center to learn more. Our Long Island eye doctor, James R. Kelly, MD proudly serves men and women in New York City, Long Island, and Manhattan, New York.
