Diabetes and LASIK

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Many patients ask whether they are good candidates for LASIK despite an existing medical condition, such as diabetes. The rules for LASIK and other medical conditions vary, and may be flexible for certain conditions. Diabetes is one condition which may produce complications after LASIK surgery, but which may also be an acceptable condition with certain restrictions.

Depending on your type of diabetes you may be a good or poor candidate for LASIK. In general, potential candidates are considered more likely to benefit from LASIK if they:

  • Do not have preexisting vision problems caused by diabetes.

The best way to determine whether you are a good candidate for LASIK is by undergoing an eye exam by an experienced LASIK surgeon and discussing your condition and concerns.

Healthcare Reform and LASIK

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

The recent bill passed for health care reform waves one big red flag at patients who are interested in laser vision correction: Better have your procedure done now. Laser vision corrections are considered elective procedures throughout the US, and the reform bill is not sympathetic to elective procedures.

Individuals who choose not to take part in government-provided healthcare will be paying penalties in the hundreds of dollars by the year 2015. Individuals who do choose to take part are unlikely to see an increase in coverage over their current privately held health coverage, and are likely to see a decrease. That means you are less likely to be able to afford LASIK in the year 2015 than you are any year before then.

The cost for LASIK is at an all-time low, down 42% from 1999, according to economics professor Mark J. Perry. The time to seize the opportunity for the best procedure at the lowest cost is now, before the new penalties and requirements kick in.

If you are interested in vision correction surgery or would like to know more about LASIK financing, please contact experienced LASIK surgeon Dr. James Kelly today, serving patients throughout New York City, Manhattan, and Long Island, New York.
