Am I a Candidate for LASIK?

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Not all patients are suitable candidates for LASIK. The procedure is performed on the cornea, which is very delicate. If your cornea is too steep, flat, thin, or irregularly shaped, it might adversely affect the results of the procedure, ruling you out as a good LASIK candidate.

You must meet the following criteria to be considered a good candidate for LASIK:

  • Over the age of 18
  • Must require a prescription that fits in the range established by FDA guidelines
  • Must be willing to accept all potential risks, complications, and side effects
  • Vision must be stable for at least one year prior to surgery
  • Cornea and retina must be healthy
  • Cornea must be thick enough to undergo laser reshaping
  • Eye pressure should be normal
  • Must not have any other major eye conditions
  • Should not be pregnant or nursing
  • There should be no evidence of collagen vascular or autoimmune disease
  • There should be no recent history of herpes in the eye
  • Must have realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure
  • Contact lens use must be discontinued for a minimum of three days before your initial evaluation

Fortunately, there are a variety of other vision corrections options for patients who are not ideal candidates for LASIK. You may be able to benefit from a procedure such as PRK, clear lens extraction, or phakic implant surgery. At your initial consultation, New York LASIK surgeon Dr. James Kelly will examine your eyes to determine which procedure will best meet your needs.

The Benefits of PRK

Friday, March 5th, 2010

If you are not an ideal candidate for LASIK, then PRK may be the right procedure to correct your refractive errors. If your corneas are too thin, steep, flat, or irregularly shaped, LASIK may not be a viable option for you. However, you may be a better candidate for a surface ablation technique such as PRK which removes less corneal tissue than LASIK.

One of the primary benefits of PRK is that there is no need to create a corneal flap. Therefore, all of the risks and complications associated with flap creation are not present in PRK. Other benefits include:

  • High success rate
  • Can be performed on an outpatient basis
  • Quick recovery time – you can generally return to work the next day
  • Ideally suited for patients with thin or damaged corneas
  • Most PRK patients do not need corrective lenses following the procedure

More than 95% of PRK patients report satisfaction with the results of their procedure, and the majority of patients find that their vision after surgery is similar to their vision with glasses or contacts prior to surgery.

At your initial consultation, Dr. Kelly will evaluate the condition of your corneas to determine the best procedure to correct your vision.

Allegretto Wave

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

The Allegretto Wave laser employs advanced technology called PerfectPulse Technology to provide you with greater accuracy in your LASIK procedure. The laser is calibrated to the unique specifications of your eye contour, resulting in a greater degree of control as the laser reshapes your cornea.

The Allegretto Wave uses highly specialized tracking technology to chart your eye movements up to 200 times a second. As a result, the laser beam is always aware of where your eye is. If your eye makes a sudden movement, the beam will wait for your eye to return to an appropriate position so that it can continue tracking.

This technology provides you with a variety of benefits compared with older LASIK procedures. The Allegretto Wave makes use of wavefront-guided technology to digitally map your eye, preserving a greater amount of corneal tissue. This leads to a more accurate procedure and clearer vision.

Allegretto Wave technology also reads a large optical zone, reducing complications in patients with large pupils. This expanded optical zone eliminates the risk of night vision side effects such as glare and haloes in most patients.

To learn more about how the Allegretto Wave laser can help provide you with enhanced results for your LASIK procedure, please contact our New York ophthalmologists today. Kelly Laser Center serves patients in the New York City, Long Island, and Manhattan, New York area.

How Does IntraLase Differ from LASIK?

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Traditional LASIK procedures use a microkeratome blade to cut the flap in your cornea. The creation of the corneal flap is an integral part of your LASIK procedure, and a more precise flap will greatly improve the results. A microkeratome blade introduces human error to the creation of the corneal flap, which may lead to an increased risk of higher order aberrations such as halos, glare, and starbursts.

The IntraLase AMO laser creates the corneal flap using a femtosecond laser. It is a completely bladeless procedure, resulting in a more precise corneal flap, improved safety, and a greater likelihood of achieving 20/20 vision.

IntraLase technology is a minimally invasive technique that utilizes a computer software program to guide the laser during the flap creation. This software provides for greater accuracy in flap creation and a smoother corneal surface.

The use of metal blades may result in uneven flap edges and abnormal corneal surfaces which might contribute to additional vision problems. They have also been known to create an improperly formed “buttonhole” flap which may lead to scarring that interferes with your vision. Flaps created with the IntraLase laser are much less likely to result in these complications.

In bladeless LASIK, the IntraLase laser operates at very high speeds, allowing corneal tissue to be precisely targeted without impacting surrounding tissue. This results in fewer complications and superior results.

IntraLase AMO Laser

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Kelly Laser Center uses the IntraLase laser by Abbott Medical Optics with our laser vision correction procedures in order to provide you with the most advanced technology available. The IntraLase AMO laser increases success rates and minimizes potential side effects for your procedure.

IntraLase technology replaces the use of a hand-held microkeratome blade in the creation of the corneal flap during a LASIK procedure. Instead, quick, short pulses of laser light are used to more accurately cut the flap. New York ophthalmologist Dr. James Kelly utilizes a computer software program to ensure your corneal flap is cut at the precise depth and shape necessary for optimal results.

There are many benefits to using IntraLase with your LASIK procedure, including:

  • 100% blade-free procedure
  • The corneal laser results in a smoother surface
  • Better results with a greater chance of achieving 20/20 vision
  • Reduced likelihood of corneal scarring
  • Creates a more customized corneal flap
  • Minimizes complications
  • Improves safety

IntraLase technology helps provide you with the highest quality results for your LASIK procedure. Experience the difference, and enjoy clear vision without corrective lenses once and for all.

Crystalens IOL

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Kelly Laser Center offers Crystalens intraocular lenses (IOL) as a treatment for patients suffering from cataracts. Crystalens represents the latest in IOL technology and provides an effective method to correct vision problems caused by cataracts.

While most IOLs only correct vision at one particular distance, Crystalens IOLs are able to correct for both near and far vision so that you will not need corrective lenses after your surgery.

Crystalens is an accommodating IOL. Therefore, it flexes and adjusts to handle different visual conditions. Your Crystalens IOL will utilize your eye muscles to alter its focus based on the various visual stimuli surrounding you. This results in only one image reaching the back of your eye, preventing your brain from having to continually adjust to the change in images.

Your Crystalens procedure can be performed quickly with minimal discomfort. New York ophthalmologist Dr. James Kelly will numb your eyes and create a micro-seal on the edge of your cornea. He will then wash away your eye’s cloudy lens and replace it with a Crystalens IOL.

Many of our cataracts patients who also suffer from presbyopia find that the Crystalens IOL is the ideal option to correct their cataracts, and they are able to enjoy clear vision without corrective lenses following the procedure.

Please contact our New York ophthalmologists today to schedule your initial consultation. Kelly Laser Center serves patients in New York City, Long Island, and Manhattan, New York.
